Pekua Upazila was established on 23 April, 2002. The newly formed Pekua Upazila was formed by separating 07 unions from 25 unions of Chakaria upazila of Cox's Bazar district. Area of Pekua upazila is 139.68 sq km. Pekua Upazila is bounded on the west by Kutubdia Upazila, on the south by Maheshkhali Upazila, on the east by Chakaria Upazila and on the north by Bashankhali Upazila. The people of Pekua Upazila generally speak the regional language of Chittagong. Ethnic Rakhine people live in this upazila. Whose language influence can be noticed in the local language. Pekua upazila is bifurcated through Bhola canal. The two banks of the river have been constructed by the Water Development Board. The Bhola canal originates from the hilly small rivers of Matamuhuri and Pekua upazilas. It joins Shilkhali, Barbakia, Pekua, Magnama, Ujantia in the Bay of Bengal. At one time this river was the main means of communication in Pekua upazila. Even today goods are transported from one place to another through this river on a limited scale. Moreover, a rubber dam has been constructed on this river to facilitate the cultivation of winter vegetables and paddy. At present agriculture is done by the water of this river. In addition, many fish are found in this river. Due to its proximity to the sea, the people of this region have survived the catastrophic and turbulent seas since ancient times. The people of Pekua Upazila have been interested in sports and recreation since ancient times. Although cricket and football are now dominant among the popular sports here, wrestling is not lagging behind among other sports. This game is held in different unions in the month of Baishakh every year. There are several playgrounds in Pekua Upazila of which Pekua Upazila Sports Complex, Barbakia Adarsh High School ground, Shilkhali High School ground are notable. Many famous people were born in this Pekua upazila. Education is gradually advancing in culture and sports. Due to the sincere efforts of the government, Pekua Upazila is playing a leading role in delivering government and private services to the people through the maximum use of information technology.
